What is Equine Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the practice of stimulating the body with a series of small needles. The practice has been in existence for thousands of years, though it has evolved throughout the centuries - where once, it was used as a bloodletting practice, it has evolved to using needles and laser light to stimulate specific points on the body.

Beginning in the 1970's, veterinarians in North America began consulting with human acupuncturists to establish acupuncture points for dogs, cats and horses. With the help of these Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) human acupuncturists, the point maps used today for equine medical acupuncture were created. The points line up with anatomical landmarks that coincide with numerous nerve plexuses, spinal nerve roots departing from the spine, major nerve routes along fascial planes and at nerve and muscle junctions.

Over the last 20 years, research into acupuncture has increased and several scientific studies have proven the effectiveness of acupuncture.

Particularly, with the use of functional MRI (fMRI) units, it is proven that brain activity occurs when acupuncture points are stimulated. Medical acupuncture is scientifically proven to stimulate the nervous system.

Also known as neuroanatomical acupuncture, medical acupuncture stimulates the nervous system helping kickstart the body to prompt healing or an immune response to treat a variety of conditions and disorders including:

  • Back pain
  • Musculoskeletal problems
  • Sinus problems
  • Spasmodic colics
  • Gastric ulcers
  • Weeping eyes
  • Respiratory problems
