Motion Equine employs cutting edge technology, complementary treatments and scientifically proven methods of veterinary care to help equine athletes maintain function and mobility for optimal health and performance. Dr. Pedersen utilizes laser therapy in her veterinary practice to treat a variety of conditions including chronic pain, degenerative diseases, muscular and skeletal trauma, arthritis and more.

What is Laser Therapy?

Laser therapy is a therapeutic treatment that utilizes light energy (photons) to stimulate tissue healing and reduce pain. Working at the cellular level, the light energy penetrates deep into damaged tissues and cells, encouraging the body to quicken its own healing process. The laser stimulates cells in the targeted tendons, ligaments or muscles to increase cellular metabolism and cell energy output, thereby reducing inflammation, increasing anti-inflammatory mediators and microcirculation and decrease edema.

Equine Laser Therapy effectively decreases pain, reduces inflammation, promotes faster wound healing, encourages tissue regeneration and can also be used to stimulate acupuncture points.

As a non-invasive, pain-free alternative to prescription pain medications, laser therapy can effectively help:

  • Timely healing of sprains and strain
  • Degenerative joint disease
  • Arthritic conditions
  • Muscular/skeletal system trauma
  • Inflammation
  • Rapid resolution of swollen areas
  • Rapid repair of wounds and ulcers

How Do Lasers Work?

LASER is actually an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emissions of Radiation. To understand how lasers work, an understanding of wavelengths, frequency, and wattage is necessary.

Light is an energy force transmitted by wavelengths. Wavelengths are measured in nanometers (nm) which describes the distance of energy from peak to peak. For a visual representation, imagine holding a prism against sunlight and revealing different colours. These colors are the different visible wavelengths of light. Wavelengths above 770 nm are termed infrared and those below 390 nm are called ultraviolent.

Frequency refers to the number of wavelengths that are measured per second, also known as Hertz (hz).

Wattage or watts is the power that is used to 'push' light through the media it is directed at.

Laser light possesses 3 characteristics which are non-divergence, coherence, and monochromatic. Non-divergent means that the laser beam is focused, like a flashlight rather than sunlight. Coherence means wavelengths travel in a straight line. Monochromatic means the laser is composed of one wavelength i.e. one colour on the light spectrum. Combined, these characteristics make laser light’s energy more powerful than ordinary light.

Motion Equine Laser Therapy

Dr. Pedersen utilizes a Multi-wave Locked System (MLS) laser technology which uses a patented combination of unique wavelengths to deliver superior results. MLS Therapy uses two wavelengths to overcome the limits of traditional laser therapy. MLS Therapy is able to induce strong anti-inflammatory, anti-edema, and analgesic effects simultaneously and within a short period of time.
